For logistics this means rotor blades exceeding 60 metres in length, nacelles and generators in the high double-digit tonne range, tower sections with excess width and height. Why wind energy components are special cases
A rotor blade is not classic heavy cargo: it is comparatively light, but extremely long and sensitive to wind – the challenge lies in curve radii, roundabouts and pinch points, not in the weight. Nacelles and generators, by contrast, are compact heavy pieces where axle loads and bridge capacities are decisive. Tower sections combine both: high weight plus excess width and height, which turn headroom under bridges and power lines into the bottleneck. Each component type therefore needs its own equipment and its own route logic.
The right vehicle for each component
- Rotor blades: telescopic long-goods trailers and specialised blade transporters; on tight passages, tilting blade adapters are used which raise the blade over obstacles
- Nacelles and generators: low-loaders and semi low-loaders with sufficient axle numbers for load distribution; for heavy pieces, modular trailers up to 200 tonnes
- Tower sections: self-steering dolly and special combinations for excess width and height
Permit and escorting
Wind energy transports practically always require a permit under German road traffic regulations (StVO §29). At long lengths and widths, BF3 escort vehicles are standard; at extreme dimensions, BF4 with traffic control powers and in some cases police escort. Many routes may only be driven at night, when traffic allows manoeuvring through pinch points. From Bremen to the wind farm: the process
It starts with the feasibility study: we survey the route from the plant or port terminal to the crane pad in the wind farm – bridge loads, headroom, curve radii, roundabouts and the notorious “last mile” across farm tracks. On this basis you receive a fixed price. Permit applications and escort vehicle planning then begin; we phase the delivery with your crane planning and site logistics so that components arrive in erection sequence. On a wind site, schedule reliability is everything
On wind construction sites, every idle day of the erection crane costs serious money. That is why we plan wind energy transports backwards from the crane window: permit lead times, night-travel windows and bad-weather reserves are priced into the schedule, not left to chance. We only quote price benchmarks after the route survey – depending on route, weight and permit situation, projects differ considerably.
Load securing and component protection
Wind energy components are expensive and sensitive: rotor blades may only be picked up at defined points, nacelles have strict specifications for inclination and acceleration forces, coated tower sections do not tolerate edge pressure. We work with manufacturer-compliant transport frames and lifting gear, document the load securing and, where required, agree it with the component manufacturer. This keeps the warranty intact – a point that in the event of damage quickly decides six-figure sums.
International too: wind projects across Europe
Many components from Bremen go not only to German wind farms, but to France, Scandinavia, Poland or South-Eastern Europe. In that case, the permit equivalents of the transit countries are added to StVO §29, each with its own escort and driving-time rules. We coordinate the complete chain including ferry or RoRo legs and keep the permits of all countries synchronised in time – so that the convoy does not wait at a border for its paperwork.
