Heavy Haulage from the North German Ports

At a glance

The north German ports of Hamburg, Bremen and Bremerhaven are one of our most important points of origin for project cargo: from the quay we plan and move heavy and abnormal load transports up to 200 tonnes – from sea handling through the onward leg to the corridors towards Turkey, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

Service area north German ports

A large share of German project cargo passes through Hamburg, Bremen and Bremerhaven – overseas imports of heavy plant just as much as exports of machinery and components all over the world. Oversize Transports serves the north German ports as an established service area and point of origin, without a branch of our own: HSNK is based in Prague, and German availability runs through a +49 30 telephone number and a personal project manager for every order. From the quay we plan and move heavy and abnormal load transports up to 200 tonnes – from sea handling through the pre- and on-carriage legs to the major international axes towards Turkey, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

Sea handling and project cargo as a point of origin

The land leg begins or ends at the quay: we take over project cargo directly from the terminal or the heavy lift vessel and bring it inland – or deliver export components just in time for shipment. Typical cargo includes plant modules, boilers and apparatus, turbines and generators, structural steel, port and crane technology as well as overseas project cargo for energy and industrial projects. For loading we use low-loaders, semi-low-loaders or modular trailers depending on the cargo and coordinate the handling with the terminal, the shipping line and the crane partner – decisive when a vessel window or a sailing date cannot be moved.

The process from the quay: feasibility, permit, transport

First we check the feasibility of the land leg: dimensions and weights against bridge capacities, clearance heights and curve radii from the port to the destination. You then receive a fixed-price quotation. We handle permit management under StVO §29 in full, including liaison with the Hanseatic cities, the north German states and the motorway authorities as well as the BF3/BF4 escort vehicles. For the heavy haulage itself, a project manager steers handling, driving windows and unloading and is reachable around the clock – aligned with the tightly scheduled terminal and vessel times.

Connection to corridors and routes

The north German ports are the ideal starting point for combined sea-road transport: overseas cargo that cannot continue by water we take from the quay overland onto our corridors. Destinations east of the EU are served via the Middle Corridor through Turkey, Georgia and the Caspian Sea – sanctions-free and bypassing Russia and Belarus. Our routes overview shows which one suits your project. We handle customs and transit clearance by T1 or TIR throughout and dovetail it with the sea-side clearance, so that no unplanned waiting time arises at the quay interface.

Wind energy and overseas project cargo

A considerable part of wind energy and power logistics runs through the north German ports: rotor blades, tower sections and nacelles arrive by ship and go from here overland to the onshore construction sites inland. We take on such over-length components from the quay with self-steering rear bogies and the appropriate blade equipment. We likewise handle overseas project cargo for industrial and energy plants that is transhipped in the port as heavy lift and distributed inland. Because demurrage and standing charges become expensive quickly at the quay interface, we plan the onward transport to a tight schedule with a buffer for customs and terminal clearance – so the cargo is not left standing on the quay while permits catch up.

For freight forwarders, project shippers and plant builders with regular port handling we dispatch recurring pre- and on-carriage legs on a known data basis. That keeps even a tight window between vessel arrival and onward transport manageable – with one point of contact for the entire land leg, who aligns terminal, customs and escort vehicles with one another and keeps you informed at every milestone.

Frequently asked questions: heavy haulage from North German Ports

Do you have an office in Hamburg or Bremen?

No. We serve the north German ports as an established service area and point of origin, without a local branch of our own – HSNK's registered office is in Prague. For you the handling stays German and personal: availability on a +49 30 telephone number, a dedicated project manager for every order and well-practised processes on the quays of Hamburg, Bremen and Bremerhaven.

Do you take over project cargo directly from the vessel or terminal?

Yes. We take over heavy and project cargo directly from the terminal or the heavy lift vessel and bring it overland to the destination – or deliver export components just in time for shipment. We coordinate the handling with the terminal, the shipping line and the crane partner and time the land transport so that vessel and terminal windows are met.

How is the transition between sea transport and road organised?

We dovetail the land leg with the sea-side clearance: customs and transit handling by T1 or TIR runs in parallel with terminal clearance, so that no unplanned waiting time arises at the quay interface. For destinations east of the EU, the Middle Corridor follows on. One project manager is responsible for the entire land leg, from vessel arrival to unloading.
