Southern Germany–Istanbul: a shorter run-up to the Balkan route
From Southern Germany – for example from the Munich, Stuttgart or Nuremberg areas – the heavy haulage transport to Istanbul is shorter than from Northern or Western Germany: via Austria, the transport quickly reaches the Balkan route through Hungary, Serbia and Bulgaria to the Kapıkule crossing. The distance is around 1,900 to 2,100 km and pure driving time 4 to 6 days.
Permits from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg
The German section is applied for via VEMAGS under StVO §29; the southern German loading points lie close to the Austrian crossings, which shortens the run-up. The national special permits of Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey then follow. Serbia marks the EU external border, from which a full customs procedure applies.
Customs: T1/TIR across the EU external border
From the Serbian border, the consignment moves under a transit procedure – as T1 and/or under a TIR carnet. TIR permits continuous handling with reduced checks; import clearance takes place in Turkey. The documents are aligned in advance with the border posts at Röszke, Kalotina and Kapıkule.
Equipment selection and load securing
The mountainous sections in Bulgaria and Turkey demand careful equipment selection: low-bed or modular axle systems with steered axles and verified clearance in case of excess height. Load securing is carried out by positive and frictional locking in line with recognised engineering standards. For oversize loads we deploy escort vehicles up to BF3/BF4 escort; in individual transit countries a police escort is additionally mandatory.
Istanbul and the connection eastwards
As with all Turkey lanes, the Bosphorus crossing must be clarified separately for destinations on the Asian side of Istanbul. At the same time, Istanbul is the gateway to the Middle Corridor towards the Caucasus and Central Asia. Turkey-specific requirements can be found on our page on heavy haulage to Turkey; the lane is part of our international heavy haulage transports.
Feasibility study and vehicle concept
From the southern German region, every Istanbul lane starts with a technical assessment: weight, length, width, height and centre of gravity determine the axle load distribution and the trailer. For the mountainous sections in Bulgaria and Turkey, gradeability, curve radii and ground clearance are carefully evaluated. The Balkan route is then checked for bridge load capacity and clearance profiles.
Time windows and border coordination
The short run-up via Austria provides a time advantage, but the lead time still depends on the driving time requirements of the Balkan countries and the opening hours of the borders. We interlock night driving bans, weekend rules and border service hours from Nickelsdorf to Kapıkule so that the transport does not stand at closed crossings. This way, the distance advantage from Southern Germany also takes effect in terms of time.
Oversize Transports as an independent project partner
Oversize Transports is the brand of HSNK s.r.o., based in Prague, and operates as an independent heavy haulage forwarder. For Turkey lanes from Southern Germany we bundle feasibility, routing, permits, escorting and customs in one hand. Enquire about your project by phone or via the enquiry form – we check feasibility and draw up a robust concept.
Surveying, escort concept and status tracking
Before departure, the cargo is measured precisely and documented photographically; the real dimensions feed into every national permit. For the mountainous sections in Bulgaria and Turkey we define a graduated escort concept – from private escort vehicles through to a police escort where required. Along the entire Balkan route we track the status and stay in contact with the driver and the border posts so that time windows are met.
Insurance and risk management
For Turkey lanes we align transport insurance, value declarations and the average concept individually with each project. Responsibilities and handling in the event of damage are thus unambiguously defined.
Typical cargo types on this lane
From Southern Germany to Istanbul, the Balkan route frequently carries machinery, plant components, transformers, vessels and construction machinery. These goods often show excess width, excess height or point loads, which determine the trailer and the axle load distribution for the mountainous sections. We select the equipment to suit the piece precisely, document dimensions and condition before departure and keep the permit and customs data consistent across all transit countries.
Whether a single oversize machine or a complete plant delivery: we calculate every Turkey lane individually and accompany it from the first feasibility study through to unloading in Istanbul – as part of our international heavy haulage transports via the Balkan route and the Middle Corridor.
