Heavy Haulage Ruhr Area → Almaty

At a glance

A heavy haulage transport from the Ruhr Area to Almaty runs via the Middle Corridor with the Caspian ferry (Baku–Aktau) and covers around 6,000–7,000 km. The lead time runs to several weeks, depending on ferry windows and permits; customs are cleared via T1/TIR, without transit through Russia.

From the Ruhr Area to Almaty: overland plus Caspian ferry

The heavy haulage transport from the Ruhr Area to Almaty is one of the most demanding lanes in our portfolio. Via the Middle Corridor it runs through the Balkans, Turkey and Georgia to Baku, from there by Caspian ferry across the Caspian Sea to Aktau in Kazakhstan, and then overland right across the Kazakh steppe to Almaty in the south-east of the country. The total distance is around 6,000 to 7,000 km – the transport is therefore clearly designed to run over several weeks.

The Caspian ferry as the critical pacemaker

The Baku–Aktau ferry connection is not a scheduled liner service but operates on demand. Ferry windows, weather and the capacity for heavy pieces largely determine the schedule. We plan sufficient buffers and coordinate delivery to the port of Baku so that standing times and transhipment effort are minimised. For excess weight and excess dimensions, ferry capacity must be confirmed bindingly in advance.

Permits across four to five countries

The German section from the Ruhr Area is permitted via VEMAGS under StVO §29. National special permits for the Balkan countries, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan then follow. Kazakhstan applies its own axle load and route requirements; the long distances between Aktau and Almaty partly run over basic trunk roads whose bridges and load capacity must be checked in advance.

Customs: continuous TIR procedure

Given the large number of non-EU borders, the TIR carnet is the obvious choice, complemented by T1 from the EU external border. The consignment thus stays under customs seal, and checks concentrate on entry and exit rather than on every intermediate border. Import clearance takes place in Kazakhstan. This lane is one of our international heavy haulage transports.

Equipment, securing and escorting

For the steppe sections and the partly rough infrastructure, robust low-bed or modular axle vehicles are standard. Load securing is carried out by positive and frictional locking in line with recognised engineering standards, with particular attention to lashing during the ferry crossing. Depending on dimensions, a BF3/BF4 escort is used, as well as an official escort in individual countries.

Kazakhstan-specific notes

Almaty lies close to the borders with Kyrgyzstan and China and is a central transhipment point for Central Asia. Country details and requirements can be found on our page on heavy haulage to Kazakhstan.

Feasibility study for an ultra-long-distance lane

At around 6,000 to 7,000 km and with a sea passage, the feasibility study is particularly thorough. We assess weight, dimensions and centre of gravity, define the axle load concept and, in parallel, clarify ferry capacity in Baku for the specific piece. The overland sections in Kazakhstan – from the port of Aktau to Almaty – are checked for bridge load capacity and road surface condition, as long distances here run over basic trunk roads.

Buffers, time windows and ferry rhythm

The Caspian ferry sets the pace for the entire lane. Because it operates on demand, we plan generous time buffers and synchronise the overland permits so that they do not expire if the crossing is delayed. Night driving bans and weekend restrictions in the transit countries as well as Kazakh driving time rules are factored in as well. This buffer logic is what distinguishes robust planning from a mere mileage estimate.

Oversize Transports as an independent project partner

Oversize Transports – a brand of HSNK s.r.o., Prague – executes the Ruhr Area–Almaty lane as a closed project, independently and without network ties. The Middle Corridor with the Caspian ferry is our core competence for Central Asia. Enquire about your project by phone or via the form; we check feasibility, ferry windows and the permit chain.

Surveying, documentation and status tracking

The cargo is measured precisely and documented before departure, since the real dimensions feed into permits and the ferry booking. On the ultra-long-distance run to Almaty we track the status continuously: delivery at the port of Baku, loading onto the ferry, arrival in Aktau and the long overland legs through Kazakhstan. This allows delays of the on-demand ferry to be offset early and the subsequent permit windows to be shifted before they expire.

Typical cargo types on this lane

Via the Middle Corridor to Almaty we frequently move plant components for mining and energy, transformers, vessels, construction machinery and industrial modules. Such goods often bring excess weight, excess height or an unfavourable centre of gravity, which shape both the vehicle concept and the ferry loading. We match trailer, axle lines and securing equipment exactly to the individual piece and document condition and dimensions before departure, so that the cargo survives the overland and sea legs undamaged and the permit data remain consistent throughout.

Frequently asked questions: Ruhr Area → Almaty

How does the transport cross the Caspian Sea?

By the Caspian ferry from Baku to Aktau. It operates on demand without a fixed schedule, which is why ferry windows and capacity for heavy pieces must be confirmed bindingly in advance and time buffers are planned in.

How long does a heavy haulage transport to distant Almaty take?

At approx. 6,000–7,000 km including the Caspian ferry, the lane runs over several weeks. The exact duration depends heavily on ferry windows, permit processing times and border handling in several countries.

Does the route cross Russia?

No. Almaty is reached via the Middle Corridor with the Caspian ferry – through Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, without transit through Russia.

How are customs handled across so many borders?

As a rule via a continuous TIR carnet, complemented by T1 from the EU external border. The consignment stays under customs seal; import clearance takes place in Kazakhstan.
