How does a heavy transport from Scandinavia to Istanbul work?
A heavy transport from Scandinavia to Istanbul starts in Sweden, Norway or Finland and reaches the classic Balkan route via Denmark and Germany. From Scandinavia, depending on the starting point, either the Øresund crossing or a Baltic Sea ferry connection – such as Puttgarden–Rødby or a link from Sweden – forms part of the chain. It then continues via Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria to the Kapıkule border crossing. Depending on the loading point, the distance is around 3,000 to 3,500 km. Several days to weeks are realistic for the overall transit time – it depends decisively on the permit chain and escort requirements, not on the mileage alone.
Oversize Transports plans such lanes as a complete project: we first check feasibility on the basis of weight, dimensions and axle loads, and derive from it the routing, equipment selection and permit requirements.
Permits along the Balkan route
The Scandinavian countries each require their own national special permits for oversize and heavy transports; in Denmark and Germany, further procedures are added. The German section of the route is applied for via VEMAGS under §29 StVO (German road traffic regulations) – this German rule expressly applies only to the German section. Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey run separate procedures with their own lead times, requirements and, in some cases, route commitments. Because Serbia is not in the EU, an external EU border with full customs procedures arises here.
Customs: T1/TIR across the external EU border
From the Serbian border, the consignment travels under a customs transit procedure – usually as T1 or under a TIR carnet. The TIR procedure allows end-to-end handling across several borders with reduced checks; import clearance takes place at the destination. We align the customs documents with the border posts at Bajakovo, Kalotina and Kapıkule in advance so that no waiting times arise at the Turkish border from missing paperwork.
Equipment selection and load securing
The equipment selection follows the cargo strictly: for tall components a low-bed or semi low-loader is used, for very heavy compact goods an axle-reinforced modular or boiler-bed trailer. With excess width or height on the mountainous section through Bulgaria, the clearance profile at bridges and tunnels must be surveyed in advance. Loads are secured by positive and friction locking in line with recognised engineering standards; heavy single pieces are lashed, chocked and secured against tipping – particularly with a view to the ferry crossing over the Baltic Sea.
Escorting and securing en route
Depending on dimensions and requirements, we accompany the transport with escort vehicles up to BF3/BF4 escort. On the Balkan route, police escorts are additionally mandatory in individual countries, which we coordinate through local partners. Night driving bans, weekend restrictions and public holiday rules feed into the scheduling.
Why Istanbul is a special case
Istanbul lies at the crossing point between Europe and Asia; for destinations on the Asian side, the Bosphorus crossing via the approved bridges or by ferry has to be clarified, as not all structures are cleared for heavy loads. At the same time, Istanbul is the gateway to onward lanes along the Middle Corridor towards the Caucasus and Central Asia. Detailed Turkish requirements can be found on our page on heavy haulage to Turkey.
Feasibility study as the first step
Before even a single kilometre is planned, we establish feasibility: we record the weight, length, width and height of the cargo as well as the centre of gravity, and derive from them the permissible axle loads and the right trailer. On the basis of this data, the Baltic Sea crossing and the Balkan route are driven virtually – ferry capacity, roundabouts, narrow town passages in Serbia and Bulgaria and critical bridges are identified. Only once route, equipment and permit requirements fit together does the project move into execution.
Oversize Transports as an independent project partner
Oversize Transports is the brand of HSNK s.r.o., based in Prague, and acts as an independent heavy haulage forwarder – not as part of a network. For lanes such as Scandinavia–Istanbul we combine feasibility, routing, permits, escorting and customs in one hand and remain your point of contact across the entire route. Send us your project by phone or via the enquiry form – we check feasibility and draw up a robust concept.
