The Munich–Stuttgart axis connects two of Germany's strongest industrial regions: automotive and mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and plant engineering generate a constant demand for heavy cargo movements on the southern corridor – presses and press tools, machining centres, transformers, test rigs and complete plant modules. The roughly 230 km along the A8 sound routine, but for oversize and heavy haulage they are not: two federal states, heavily loaded motorway sections, roadworks and limited night-travel windows turn the short distance into a planning project. Two federal states, one permit procedure

The permit under German road traffic regulations (StVO §29) is issued route-specifically – for Munich–Stuttgart, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are involved, and for the first or last mile to plants, possibly municipalities with their own requirements. Applications today run via the nationwide standardised electronic procedure (VEMAGS), but the substantive assessment remains a matter for the states: each authority evaluates bridge loads, roadworks and pinch points on its own section. We file the applications, supply technical documentation and load distribution plans and keep the conditions of both states consistent – so that the transport does not meet new conditions at the state border.

The A8 in detail: roadworks and alternative routes

The A8 between Munich, Ulm and Stuttgart is one of the busiest routes in southern Germany. Relevant for heavy cargo are changing roadworks layouts with narrowed lanes, gradient sections such as the Albaufstieg climb, and time-based driving bans for abnormal and heavy transports. Depending on dimensions, we divert onto surveyed parallel routes section by section. That is precisely why we carry out a feasibility study before every quotation: bridge loads, headroom and current roadworks situations determine which route is driveable in which time window.

Plant delivery with a time window

Industrial deliveries in the Stuttgart or Munich area rarely end at a loading ramp: machines have to go onto foundations, presses into halls with limited door height, transformers to substations. We coordinate crane and loading appointments, check the access on the plant premises and phase the delivery onto your installation window – at night or at weekends too, where production shutdowns require it. Planning costs and lead time realistically

For the southern corridor the rule is: the price depends less on distance than on the permit situation, escort conditions and time windows. We therefore quote credible figures after the feasibility study as a fixed price; beforehand they remain benchmark ranges depending on route, weight and permit situation. For lead time, you should allow at least two to four weeks for transports requiring permits, and more for heavy pieces with structural assessment.

First and last mile: the critical kilometres off the motorway

On the A8, a permitted heavy transport is in good hands – what is usually critical are the first and last kilometres: village throughroads with tight bends, level crossings, roundabouts, limited capacity of municipal bridges and plant entrances with restricted door heights. We survey these sections with the same care as the motorway and agree temporary measures – such as no-parking zones or the temporary removal of traffic signs – with the municipalities.

Beyond the corridor

For many customers the southern corridor is only one section: plant from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg continues to Austria, Switzerland, Italy or Eastern Europe. We plan such onward legs straight away – including the permit procedures of the destination countries – and thereby keep interfaces and transhipment risks out of your project. Alpine transit conditions such as tunnel restrictions are also factored into the route choice early, so that the final date remains reliable and your project does not stall at a border or a tunnel portal.

Usually a low-bed trailer: the low loading height keeps the overall height below critical clearances, and the axle configuration distributes the load in a way that spares bridges. For compact, very heavy pieces, a modular trailer can make more sense. We make the choice based on dimensions, weight and centre of gravity – and on the pinch points on your specific route.
